Spider-Man: Far From Home's 10 Biggest Spoilers

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Far From Home is now in theaters, wrapping up Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and paving the way for what's next, so here are the biggest spoilers, twists and surprises in the sequel. Far From Home is the direct sequel to 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it also occupies an exceptionally important spot in the MCU release slate. Not only is it the first film following the world-changing events of Avengers: Endgame, it's also the final MCU movie in Phase 3.

As such, Tom Holland's second solo outing as Peter Parker aka. Spider-Man must walk a line between offering a compelling continuation of the character's arc in Homecoming, as well as give moviegoers another exciting superhero movie experience. As evidenced by the Spider-Man: Far From Home reviews, it seems the film is successful in doing so. Far From Home picks up after Endgame's time jump, with those who returned and those who weren't decimated having to figure out how to move forward. For his part, Peter heads to Europe with his classmates for summer vacation, but the trip is interrupted when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits the young superhero to battle world-threatening Elementals alongside Quentin Beck aka. Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Now that Spider-Man: Far From Home is hitting theaters around the world, we're breaking down the 10 biggest spoilers, plot twists and gasp-worthy surprises in the latest MCU movie. So one last time: There are SPOILERS ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Mysterio Is A Villain - From Our Earth Spider-Man Far From Home Mysterio Jake Gyllenhaal

Although the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers have positioned Mysterio as a new mentor for Spider-Man, and a superhero from other Earth in the multiverse, it's revealed in the movie that Quentin Beck is actually a villain. This particular character reveal may not come as a surprise to Marvel Comics fans since Mysterio was originally a wannabe superhero who turned out to be a supervillain. However, the movie does feature Peter truly bonding with Beck, allowing the older "superhero" to fill the role of mentor that was left open after Tony Stark's death. It makes the reveal of Mysterio's true intentions all the more shocking and heartbreaking. Plus, it casts doubt on whether there really is a multiverse, since Beck isn't actually from a different Earth.

advertising Mysterio Wants To Become The New Iron Man Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio in Spider-Man Far From Home

In Far From Home, Mysterio's goal is to become the next great protector of Earth, filling the void left by Iron Man and, ultimately, gaining the recognition and respect Beck feels he's deserved. Beck's villainous origin is tied directly to Stark, having worked with Tony on the technology that eventually became the BARF (Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing) prototype - Beck's none too happy about what Stark named the tech, either. But Beck is determined to become the next great superhero, proving that Stark was wrong about him, even if it means manipulating and killing people in the process.

Elementals Are An Illusion - Using BARF Tech Water Elemental From Spider-Man Far From Home

The means through which Mysterio sets about achieving his goal of becoming a superhero is creating the threat of the Elementals. Beck, along with a team of others who were wronged by Stark in the past, uses BARF and drones to create realistic illusions of elemental monsters that Mysterio then "defeats." The team also designed the Mysterio costume and wrote his multiverse backstory for him, though Beck is the actor who must ultimately sell the performance to the public, Fury and Spider-Man. However, it's actually Peter's classmates who name Mysterio; when they're watching an Italian news broadcast about Beck's battle with an Elemental in Venice, they mistake the newscaster calling him "a man of mystery" in Italian for "Mysterio" - and the name catches on.

During the battle in which Spider-Man helps Mysterio defeat the fire Elemental, a part of a drone gets knocked off and MJ (Zendaya) picks it up. When she confronts Peter about being Spider-Man (a scene that's been teased in the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers), he vehemently denies his superhero alter-ego. However, when MJ reveals the piece of drone tech and it malfunctions, projecting a portion of the Elemental illusion, Peter figures out Mysterio isn't who he claimed to be. Realizing the world is still in danger, Peter quickly tells MJ the truth, that he is Spider-Man, and that he has to leave their class trip in order to warn Fury.

The MCU has received criticism in the past for killing off its best villains, and it seems they continue that trend in Spider-Man: Far From Home as the final battle ends with Mysterio dying. Peter doesn't kill him, though. Instead, when Mysterio and Spider-Man are facing off in an enclosed bridge, Beck orders all the drones in the vicinity to fire on Peter, despite him being in the crosshairs. Mysterio gets hit by one of the drones and eventually succumbs to the wound - though not before one last illusion meant to kill Peter. Still, as Mysterio tells Spider-Man, he has a contingency plan and what exactly that plan is doesn't become clear until the mid-credits scene (more on that later).

Peter & MJ Kiss Zendaya and Tom Holland in Spider-Man Far From Home

At the end of the final battle, Peter and MJ reunite on the Tower Bridge. MJ, along with Happy (Jon Favreau), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Flash (Tony Revolori) and Betty Brant (Angourie Rice), were cornered by some of Mysterio's drones. However, when Peter defeats Mysterio and gains control of the drones, he turns them all off. Once they're free, MJ seeks out Peter and they're each relieved to see the other. Peter takes the moment to profess his feelings for MJ,  and they share a kiss.

Aunt May & Happy Hogan Are Dating?

All throughout Spider-Man: Far From Home, it's implied something is going on between Peter's Aunt May and Happy Hogan. Early on, the pair are flirting at an event put on by May, who's working to raise money to help those left homeless by Thanos' snap. Then Happy is with May at work when Peter calls to check in. Finally, once he's back in New York City, Peter sits them both down and asks for answers. However, while Happy is convinced they're dating, May says it's just a summer fling - so it seems they're not on the same page and it's unclear if anything will come of the relationship.

J.K. Simmons Plays New J. Jonah Jameson J Jonah Jameson - JK Simmons

In the first Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene, Peter and MJ are outside Madison Square Garden when a special news report comes on the big screens that hang on the arena. The newscaster introduces a "controversial site" that's run by the MCU's J. Jonah Jameson, and he's played by none other than J.K. Simmons. Previously, the actor played J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy that starred Tobey Maguire. However, this isn't the same J. Jonah Jameson, it's a new take on the character that's played by the same actor. In the MCU, this Jameson runs The Daily Bugle.net and yells at a camera, which no doubt will remind viewers of political pundits in the current real world media.

J. Jonah Jameson Reveals Spider-Man’s Secret Identity Spider-Man Far From Home Tom Holland

The contingency plan Mysterio warned Spider-Man about turns out to be leaking a doctored video to the press, namely Jameson and The Daily Bugle.net, that makes it look like Spider-Man was the person who both killed Mysterio and was behind the attack on London. The video features Mysterio saying Spider-Man attacked him, then includes Spider-Man telling the drones to "execute them all," but it's taken out of context so it seems he's telling them to kill people instead of to stop killing people. The video concludes with the reveal that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. So Mysterio unmasks Spider-Man and attempts to turn the public against him in one fell swoop.

advertising Talos Is Posing as Nick Fury on Earth (& The Real Fury’s In Space) Spider-Man Far From Home Nick Fury Maria Hill

The second Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene reveals that Captain Marvel's friend Talos, the Skrull shapeshifter, has been posing as Nick Fury for the entirety of the film. Presumably, Talos took Fury's place on Earth sometime after the events of Avengers: Endgame (this explains Fury/Talos' reaction to Spider-Man mentioning Captain Marvel's name). Meanwhile, the real Fury is vacationing somewhere in space, on what appears to be a massive ship. At the very end of the scene, Fury yells - to nobody in particular - to get back to work.
