PM Oli tells NAC to improve management efficiency

By A Staff Reporter

Kathmandu, July 2: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday underlined the urgency of improving the management of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) to save it from a collapse.

Addressing a function organised to mark the 61st Anniversary of NAC, the Prime Minister said that the government could not provide any financial support to the corporation in the existing situation. "Loan of the corporation has reached Rs. 37 billion, which has increased continuously for 61 years due to failure of its management in operation of its aircraft, the government cannot provide any support to the corporation in the existing situation," he said."Why is the national flag carrier, NAC, always in loss at a time when all the private companies are earning profit?" the Prime Minister questioned. He said that the corporation was a property of the state, therefore, the government could intervene at any time. “If the corporation management cannot operate it effectively, strategic partner can also be invited,” he addedHe, however, said that NAC could be a profit earning corporation if its management and employees made honest attempts for the benefit of the corporation."The government was ready not only to support the NAC but also to carry it on its shoulders, but it will not do so blindly, the management and operation should be efficient," he said. The management should submit a concrete action plan to the government with strong commitment to implementing it, he said. The managerial inefficiency of NAC has been demonstrated by the number of aircraft lying idle in airport which should have been flying in the sky, he said."Once when I saw many aircraft of NAC at Tribhuvan International Airport, I asked someone about the many aircraft of the national flag carrier. I got a reply that the large number of aircraft seen in the airport was due to failure to fly them in the sky, if they were flown, they would be in the sky and NAC would also be in profit," the Prime Minister said referring to a recent context. The Prime Minister blamed that NAC management was making decision arbitrarily. "The destination is unknown, wide body has been purchased without managing pilots. Such decisions have led to NAC to go on the verge of collapse," he said. The Prime Minister also directed NAC management to make preparations to fly its planes in Narita International Airport of Japan and in European countries.Madan Kharel, executive chairman of NAC, said that not only NAC, but many airlines of Asia had incurred loss and are about to be shut down due to operation of low cost carriers.Established on July 1, 1958 through enactment of Nepal Airlines Corporation Act 2019, the National flag carrier purchased two wide-body aircraft after a long gap about a year ago. However, it failed to operate its new aircraft in targeted new destinations so far. The corporation is planning to start its Osaka (Japan) flight from the last week of August.
